What is airline cargo management software?
Airline cargo management software is the operational, commercial, and financial backbone an airline or ground handler uses to run air freight — managing a shipment's whole lifecycle from quote and booking through handling, flight, delivery, and revenue accounting. What a cargo management system does
Air cargo is a logistics business wrapped in a documentation and messaging business. Behind every shipment is a chain of events — a forwarder asks for space, a rate is quoted, an air waybill is issued, the freight is accepted and built onto a unit, it flies, it is broken down and delivered, and finally everyone gets paid and reconciled. The standards underneath
A cargo system is only as useful as the partners it can talk to, so the standards layer matters as much as the features. For decades that layer was Cargo-IMP — IATA's text-based EDI messages exchanged over Type B networks — later joined by its XML successor, Cargo-XML. The e-AWB made the paper air waybill electronic. The newest layer is IATA ONE Record, which replaces message-by-message EDI with a single shared digital record of each shipment, accessed over a secured web API. ONE Record became IATA's preferred data-exchange method on 1 January 2026, though adoption remains voluntary.
Legacy suites vs cloud-native platforms
Air cargo IT lagged the passenger side in digital maturity, and the defining shift of the 2020s is the move from monolithic, on-premise or hosted systems toward cloud-native, API-first platforms. The established suites are mature and battle-tested, run much of the world's air freight, and are themselves modernising — but they were built and sold in an enterprise-software era: long procurement cycles, professional-services implementations, and licences negotiated by contract.
The newer generation inverts that model. Instead of a tender, you sign up. Instead of a per-seat licence, you pay for usage. Instead of a private integration per partner, there is a public, documented API.
